Abstract

Considered are possible changes in the characteristics of the ice regime induced by the chronic surface pollution in the zones affected by industrial centres. It is proposed to determine dimensions of these zones from satellite images during the snowmelt period. The results from airborne-landed determinations of snow pollution in the area around Leningrad including Lake Ladoga are presented. The relationship between pH values and the pollutant concentration in sample is revealed. Effects of pollution on the ice regime of rivers near cities and industrial centres are considered with reference to the Tom River. It is shown that observations of ice forms at posts located in industrially affected areas are non-representative. (L'Ed.)
