Abstract

The goal of this research is to demonstrate the potential of a newly developed spatial synoptic climatological classification to assess changes in atmospheric pollution concentrations in nine U.S. cities. The procedure divides the United States into homogeneous regions on the basis of surface synoptic weather data. The resulting categories are then related to metropolitan-scale pollution concentrations. Thus, it becomes possible to determine the characteristics of those synoptic situations associated with above or below normal pollution levels
