Abstract

In Belgium, two socio-ecological groups, as revealed by contrasting distribution patterns, can be distinguished amongst 49 native species commonly referred to as " calciphilous " crop-weeds. In fact 21 are xerothermophilous species (Caucalidion) only growing on shallow soils in the Meuse district, whereas 20 others display a broader ecological amplitude (basiphilous aphanion). The former group is nearly eradicated in Belgium : the latter partly persists on limestone outcrops. At Tellin (Meuse district), 20 calciphilous crop-weeds were listed in 1986 in three herbicide-free fields. The Papaveri-Melandrietum noctiflogi Wassch. 41 is recorded for the first time in Belgium. - (Author)
