Abstract

Japanese investment in eight vehicular assembly plants in the USA was made not in Michigan, the traditional center of American automobile industry. Instead all firms were located in small towns in other states where unions are weak and the cost of labor is lower : Honda in Ohio, Nissan in Tennessee, Toyota in Kentucky, Mitsubishi in Illinois and Subaru and Isuzu in Indiana. In addition, most Japanese-owned parts suppliers, which increased from 50 in 1984 to over 200 in 1989, have been located in these same states. - (DWG)
