Abstract

Preserving the landscape heritage is a challenge to the prevailing American tendency to focus on the present and future. The A. shows how local forces, divided between " elitists " and " pluralists " have achieved landscape preservation with differing levels of success. The sites examined are St. Augustine, Florida (founded in 1565, the oldest continuously occupied city in the USA)| Colonial National Historical Park which encompasses Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, Virginia| Sackets Harbor, New York, a nineteenth-century battlefield site of the War of 1812 against the British| and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, battlefield site of the Civil War. - (DWG)
