Abstract

A comparison is made between winter snow cover, Continentality Index values, freezing and thawing indices, and the apparent edaphic-ecological wetness and dryness of the sites as judged by distribution of differing types of alpine vegetation, soils and landforms. The continentality index needs to be based on the lower limit of continuous permafrost to be most effective in Canada, this being defined here as regions with greater than 80 % of the area underlain by permafrost
