Abstract

Human geography is declared to be an empirical science. Some implications for research practice can be discussed : It is suggested that 1. human geography depends on a careful and critical treatment of concepts and classes, 2. a closer focus on the functional aspects of geographical knowledge should be incorporated, and 3. behavioral geography should emphasize more explicitely the pragmatic structure of everyday life. It is concluded, however, that the incorporation of a pragmatic base model does not imply that principles of analytical research have to be abandoned. The practice of scientific reasoning in human geography could be improved by incorporating 1. a fresh look at the merits of explanatory description, 2. a powerful metalanguage (e.g. conceptual graphs), and 3. the logic of abduction
