Abstract

Monthly standard deviations of daily maximum (high) temperatures are computed and mapped for 151 sites across the conterminous United States for the period 1951-1980 in order to portray spatial and temporal variations of intra-monthly temperatures. No evidence is found to support the popular hypothesis that temperature variability has increased in recent decades. Synoptic explanations are advanced to account for the spatial patterns of variability depicted on the 30-year composite annual map, maps of individual extreme years, and on 30-year composite maps for each of the 12 months
