Abstract

The AA. highlight three scales of temporal variability in bedload transport rates that result primarily from the downstream migration of coherent bedforms such as ripples, dunes, and bars, and which were defined by continuous data obtained during the course of laboratory investigations into bedload sampling and transport in gravel-bed channels. The experiments were undertaken in wide flumes, with well-sorted sediments and under steady flow and equilibrium transport conditions. These data are detailed enough to elucidate the cause of the temporal variability unequivocally, and facilitate a comparison between the observed and predicted cumulative frequency distributions that characterize them
