Abstract

This research tests several hypotheses concerning the effect of fire on chaparral soil heterogeneity, and evaluates the theoretical ramifications for ecosystem development. The fine-scale heterogeneity in chaparral soils could have two possible origins : (1) an inherent variability in soils owing to geological and genetic constraints, and (2) an alteration of soil physical and chemical properties by the vegetation
