Abstract

Cadasters, mountain drawings concerning yakihata (slash and burn agriculture) of the Edo period (1600-1868) and Meiji period (1868-1912) were discovered and studied by the A. in Shirakawa (Japanese Alps). Contrary to accepted opinions, yakihata had rather increased from the early Edo period to the late Meiji Era and almost all the yakita fields had turned into forest or wasteland, not to paddy fields. The typical differentiation of social strata among farms could not be found in the study area. - (SGA)
