Abstract

The A. examines food consumption and its regional differences in Ibaraki Prefecture north of Tokyo in the late Meiji Era (1868-1912), using data recorded in Chosonze (a statistical record of each town and village). Rice was the most important food. The total per capital consumption in calories was about 2 400 kilo calories as much as the number of calories consumed by a full-time farmer after World War II. - (SGA)
