Abstract

A multivariate analysis of soil pit data from 20 sites indicates three major soil groups (alkaline-neutral sands, acid sands, acid loams) in the area, each supporting distinct groups of vegetation types. On the Agulhas Plain, the hypothesis that the floristic diversity is a function of soil and landform variation appears to be confirmed. The Agulhas Plain remains a notable example of site specialization by promoting the richness of a flora within a wide variety of sites juxtaposed in a comparatively small area
