Abstract

Water resources of the Karakum are made up by underground water encounted everywhere and by temporary surface run-offs which are formed on clay catchment areas during rainfalls. Fresh and slightly saline underground water is confined to the Amudarya valley, the Karakum Canal and other aboveground sources of water and also exists in the form of underground water lenses of various origin and size. 8 large underground water lenses with the total amount of water over 80 km3 have been found and studied in the Karakum
