Abstract

All landscapes (in humid climates) can be considered as a superposition and juxtaposition of " catenas ", each " catena " consisting on top of a flat eluvial, in the middle of a steep colluvial and at the bottom of a flat alluvial zone. Catenas had originally been observed in connection with soil surveys| here it is maintained that they have a much deeper systems-theoretical significance
