The geomorphic development of dells (Upland swamps) on the Woronora Plateau, N.S.W., Australia

Abstract

Dells, swampy valleys at the head of deep gorges, are seen here as valleys which remain choked with sandy sediment over long periods because of the stabilishing feedback relationships between the mass of sediment, the retention of water in that sediment, the absence of a continuous channel and the vegetative cover. The dells are not sites of extensive and rapid denudation and planation on the plateau| they act mainly as long term sediment traps
