ST Berry and Garrison's central place theory re-visited (Inconnue)

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

In an important paper, Berry and Garrison maintained that it can be argued that regardless of the distribution of purchasing power, whether in open countryside or within a large metropolis, a hierarchical structure of central place that supplies central goods is to emerge. This argument is based on Christaller's concepts, now termed " the range and the threshold " respectively, of an outer and inner limit of the range of a commodity. Despite similarity seemingly existent between what can be deduced from Christaller's theory and Berry and Garrison's extended version, it should be cautioned of the differences of the reasoning between the two theories as regards why the hierarchy emerges in the system. - (K.
