Abstract

A fascinating very comprehensive political geography of the steadily changing influences of Spanish, West-European, and American powers in the Western Caribbean and along the Central American isthmus. An introduction on general spatial patterns is followed by a chronological description of economic and political developments and conflicts throughout the colonial and modern history. Five case studies concern the Central American coastal periphery, the indian population along the Costa Rica-Panama border, the Darien, the islands of San Andres and Providencia, and the Cayman Islands.
