Abstract

There has been an almost world wide predominance of erosion on beaches for periods ranging from a few years to several centuries. A deficit of sand supply from the sea-floor and a sea-level rise of about 1,5 mm/yr are the main natural causes of such a behaviour which is in many cases enhanced by human activities. The effectiveness of traditional defensive structures is discussed. A new approach of the beach erosion problem is proposed, implying that often it is better to move than to protect.
