Abstract

The paralic aquatic environments which are situated between the marine and continental realms are extremely different as far as their shape, morphology and genesis. On the contrary, the biological populations are characterized by species strictly bounded to that kind of environments. The essential parameter which control the organisms distribution and the features of living populations may be described as the time of renewal with marine element in each given point. This parameter is called "Confinement". A confinement scale is proposed from biological data. From this new point of view, it appears that far from being marginal, the paralic realm played an important role in the biosphere and lithosphere history on our planet.
