Abstract

The Japanese people have paid much attention to the protection of fluvial and coastal plains from natural disasters| the following points are examined: historical records of stabilization of coastal sand dunes| reclamation of tidal flats| formation of mega-industrial belts by the reclamations of tidal flats and the nearshore zones of bays such as Tokyo, Ise and Osaka.
