Abstract

The sandy foreland east of Somers consists of numerous subparallel dune ridges, pattern of which indicates long-term accretion. Recent stages in the growth of southern coastline have been traced from successive air photographs| repeated survey on 24 transects have demonstrated continuing erosion and eastward drifting to accreting sectors at Cormoran Pt and Sandy Pt. Estimates of areal and volumetric losses and gains show a net loss from the beach system, some of the sand being carried on to backshore dunes and some being removed offshore to the extensive bar system that runs out to Middle Bank.
