Abstract

Investigations on marine notches, beachrocks and emerged intertidal barnacles have shown that the southern part of Okinawa Island was uplifted about 2.5 m approx. 2400 years ago, probably as a result of a great earthquake of an estimated magnitude of 7.4 and a recurrence interval of 7000 to 10,000 years. Holocene crustal movements are discussed also in Ishigaki and Miyako islands.
