Comments on the concept of linkages from the perspective of corporate organization in the modern capitalist system

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

This paper questions conventional interpretations of linkages, and supplements the traditional backward forward linkage classification by recognizing the hierarchical dimension of interregional relations. The traditional application of the linkage concept within a Keynesian export-led development framework is criticized on the grounds that corporate organization and strategy undermine the development of local linkages that are important for positive regional changes. The corporate enterprise in national and international contexts creates patterns of dominance and dependence, and maintains these relationships through backward and forward linkages that are themselves dominant and dependent. This paper introduces an explicit typology of linkages in relation to corporate organization and regional differentiation, and discusses the conditions that account for variable circumstances.
