Abstract

Noril'sk, founded in 1935, is today the leading nickel mining and processing center in the USSR. This article reviews the history of mineral development at Noril'sk, before focusing upon recent events transforming the local economy. The latter include the opening of ever deeper mines at Talnakh, a shift in the local fuel base toward natural gas and hydroelectricity, and construction of a second nickel plant west of the city. Planners'comments regarding future development prospects also receive attention.
