Abstract

Applying location theory and quantitative analysis, the classification and hierarchy of shopping centres and the factors affecting shopping centre location is attempted for urban Shanghai. Cluster analysis is applied to classify 61 major shopping centres. Grouping is based on the method of data standardization-oblique space-shortest distance linkage which forms the basis for recognising a hierarchy of three levels and five types numbering 1, 3, 5, 12, 40 respectively. Suggestions are given to construct sub-city level centres and to strengthen district centres. (TNC).
