With a table of content consisting of 20 pages, one would expect a well-documented book. The impetus for this book having come from a student from Biâbânak who had written a thesis "in the way the author had been searching for a long time", the A. gathered further information and consulted his own documentation especially from Sahre Rey to write this book. Dividing Iran into two parts, according to precipitation, the A. is concerned with the eastern area which is the region. The qanât (subterranean aqueduct) is the basic source of water which is the dry region. The qanât (subterranean aqueduct) is the basic source of water which is considered| comparisons are made between the qanât and the well to prove that the former is more economical. The A. first gives a description of the qanât and the way it is built, and then he assesses the specific work performed by each of the five categories of specialists and workers employed for this job. He then describes the qanât in different cities such as Ardestân, Semnân and Golpâyegân, and considers the measurement of water in different areas. Here individuals who are responsible for dividing the water and reparing the canals are discussed. The great merit of this book does not come from its consideration of irrigation system, clarifying questions relating to the class structure of the society, but rather from the very precise data the A. presents. It unravels some of the mysteries of the qanât, and the complicated temporal and spatial measurement. system in different dry regions of Iran. (ABSTR. IR., 1982, 5, réf. 820).
