Abstract

The development of Siberian resource areas requires maximum provision of a local food supply, especially fresh milk, meat and produce, in a harsh northern environment. But even optimal expansion of agricultural land would still be inadequate to meet the entire food needs of the prospective resource development areas. The present status and future prospects of agriculture in the Siberian resource-development areas are reviewed, and the degree to which local food production can be generated is analyzed. Particular attention is given to provisioning the new development zone along the BAM.
