Accessibility and development of export agriculture in Dominica

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

McQUILLAN D. A. ;

Abstract

A review of patterns of commercial agriculture in Dominica at first seems to support the hypothesis that the variety and distribution of crop production are largely determined by accessibility. However, the basic assumptions of rational economic behaviour cannot be made. The author proposes instead an explanation of the distinctive geographical patterns of estate agriculture based on the historical development of agriculture in Dominica rather than in economic models of distance decay.
