Slavery to freedom in the British Caribbean: ecological considerations

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

RICHARDSON B. C. ;

Abstract

At emancipation in the British Caribbean in the 1830s, planter coercion of newly-freed blacks and responses by the blacks themselves were conditioned partly by physical environmental circumstances. This paper describes three types of ecological adaptations "highland", "lowland", and "migration" made by ex-slaves at emancipation. (MPM).
