Abstract

A method of testing whether or not points on a line are randomly distributed is discussed, and inaccuracies in previous work are pointed out. Difficulties over boundary conditions are resolved and lead to the identification of three cases: a. The points are on a closed curve. b. The points are on a non-closed curve and include the end points of that curve, and. c. The points are on a non-closed curve but do not (in general) include the end points of the curve. Each of these cases is discussed with appropriate geographical examples and the mean and variance of the three statistics are given. A brief table of percentage points is included. Final discussion stresses the simplicity and general applicability of this method.
