Historical records of the Qin (221-207 BC) and Han (207 BC-220AD) dynasties show that the present day bare hills and parched landscape of Gansu were forest-covered and grasslands supporting large herds of domestic animals. It was due to over-expansion of cultivation, deforestation, and war in late Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) that the balance in the ecosystem was disturbed. Population explosion and overgrazing in the Ming (1368-1644 AD) and Qing (1644-1911 AD) dynasties further speeded up the destruction of the natural vegetation. (TNC).
