Abstract

The lack of arable land and inacessibility are major factors for the sparsity of people in this region in historic times. High death rates result from the lack of medical facilities and unbalanced diet. Major developments by immigrants began only in the Qing Dynasty but they gave rise to the opening up of slopes for cultivation, deforestation and soil erosion which continue to the present. Rejuvenation of the region depends on forestry, selective cropping, animal husbandry and finding substitutes for firewood. (TNC).
