Abstract

A sample of 74 adult Bufo pentoni, a sub-desertic toad, has been collected in northern Senegal, in order to study the age structure of the adult population. It is concluded that: 1. Bufo pentoni becomes sexually mature at about 2 years of age| 2. The annual recruitment of mature individuals in the population varies greatly from year to year, in conjunction with the yearly variation in rainfall, and 3. that the life-expectancy of this toad can reach six years. Such an heterogeneous age-structure can be considered as adaptive to the very peculiar environmental conditions prevailing in the Sahel.
