Abstract

Measurements and trend analysis along sandy shorelines allows two factors to be recognized: the type of coastline and its orientation. On Chile's Central coast only one example of man-induced change was observed. The displacement that occurred was controlled by natural straightening Dune stabilization was effective only on small active dunes. Air photography for the period 1955 to 1978 reveals the evolutionary pattern of a given coastline is one indicator that can be used to forecast the impacts of coastal zone management decisions.
