Abstract

The A. states that territoriality is based on three elements: an individual, an instrument, and an object. Territories are marked by spatial changes over time and through mutual relationships. Every boundary characterizes an area according to its own regulations of life. Territories on either side of a boundary show differing networks of spatial relationships. The boundary does not only limit a territory but also the range of activity of a generally recognized instrument such as money. One can deduce that to alter the significance of a boundary means to change the character of a territory.
