Abstract

The herbivorous zooplankton constitutes the food supply of two predator guilds, planktonic invertebrates and nectonic vertebrates (essentially fish). Their effects are additive: the impact of the former falls mainly on small species, whereas the action of the latter on large species. Under the influence of this double selective predation (tactile and visual), the zooplankton builds up adaptive responses whose nature varies according to the species and according to the respective importance of each of the two guilds. These strategies occur at three different levels of organization: individual (escaping notice), demographic i. e. population level (cyclomorphosis, polymorphism, migration etc.) and biocenotic (restructuring).
