Abstract

This paper presents a general view of the nature of grain demand and utilization in the USSR and provides assessment of Soviet resources in terms of the prospects of resolving the grain problem. Special attention is given to the assessment of climatic and technological resources and their impact on grain production increase. Based on these considerations, long-term and short-term projections of grain production are made, and the prospects of satisfying the need for grain are estimated. The analysis indicates that exporting energy goods and importing grain is a more efficient way to balance grain supply and demand than to further increase investments in agriculture. (Ed.).
