Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

Central shopping streets are classified into two types by their forms: the shops face a trunk street (type A), or they face a pedestrian street (type B). The author discusses the two types by comparing data collected through field investigations carried in 1971 and 1981. Vertical growth is more evident and vertical differentiation progressing more in type A. There is a tendancy for retail and amusement functions to be located exclusively in type B and horizontal differentiation tends to arise. The stability of type B is greater to type A.
