Abstract

The author investigates the process of reclamation and socio-economic rural structures during the Edo period in a mountain village (Kubiki county of Echigo province). The farmers were mostly small landowners. Especially numerous were peasants, dependant farmers who sought more independance for themselves. They reclaimed farm lands for the expansion of their landownership. Thus, the reclamation of farm lands in mountain villages advanced with the independance of peasants and good use of physical conditions. The author thinks that such processes were a new form of organization in which the settlements solved the problems of population increase and the hardships of farmers'lives, while stabilizing the old rural structures.
