Abstract

From the 1965 census schedules of the Cameroons, it proved possible to reconstruct the fertility of three female cohorts belonging to the Douala and Widekum groups in the Cameroons. Members of these cohorts lived through the beginnings of the campaigns against illiteracy and the period of modernization. Their reproductive behaviour differs between different cohorts and ethnic groups, because their historical and anthropological situation is different. Within a given cohort belonging to a specific ethnic group, there is greater variation in behaviour: some women profit from modernization to achieve traditional ideals more quickly, others abandon traditional ideals altogether.
