La population de l'Angleterre de 1541 à 1871

Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

In this article, the reconstitution of the population of England for the period 1541 to 1871 conducted by the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure, presented by E. A. Wrigley and R. S. Schofield in their important work published in 1981, is reviewed and analysed. It begins by recapitulating the method used by the authors to obtain by back-projection, from series of births and deaths, an estimate of the age structure of the population and goes on to describe the measures of fertility, mortality and nuptiality they have derived from these series, and their analysis of interrelationships between the series and of their connection with economic and climatic indices. Three special topics in this reconstitution are then more thoroughly.
