Abstract

The object of this clarification is, by a series of precise and concrete examples, to give a definition in terms of different natural surroundings of the agricultural settlement sites which in Norway are principally determined by physical factors. It appears that the first permanent settlers chose the locations for their farm buildings according to functional considerations concerning the necessity of avoiding as much as possible the inconveniences which might result from physical constraints on their efforts at development (proximity of a source of drinking water, dry and firm building terrain, nearby exploitable land, etc.) rather than socio-political factors (such as the more or less chronic insecurity which sometimes played a major role in other socio-cultural areas, the strength of the village community, etc.).
