Abstract

During the last two decades, manufacturing in Australia has declined in its contribution to both employment opportunities and national income, and there has been some "de-industrialization" similar to that in some other developed capitalist countries during the seventies: increase of mineral and energy resources exports| the main pressures on industry arise from Australia's semi-peripheral role in the world economy. Foreign ownership has increased rapidly in both mining and manufacturing and there has been a variety of responses from domestic capital, labour and the state. The industrial changes have been uneven in their impacts on regions and Australian cities.
