Abstract

The A. presents 2 questions related to the presence of boulders in plain alluvial formations: I: the evolution of the different terms used for boulders in French during the XIXth and XXth centuries| 2: the evolution of all the hypothesis that, from 1660 to nowadays, were put forward to explain the setting of those oversized boulders in alluvial deposits. The term "bloc démesuré" is predominantly used since 1961 and that the hypothesis favored by the majority of scientists, after 1951, is the transportation by means of rafted ice.
