Abstract

The bird and large mammals remains are here examined. All the species recognized in the Jebel Irhoud fauna present a great coherence from an ecological point of view and are indicative of a steppic environment. The Jebel Irhoud fauna differs clearly from the extant Morocco fauna and is characterized by the absence of any eurasiatic immigrated species. Therefore, the karstic filling of the neanderthal grotto is certainly slightly older than the faunal change which occured during the Upper Pleistocène.
