Authors(s) and Affiliation(s)

Radio-transmitters were fixed to the backs of 20 hedgehogs who were followed nightly for four to six week periods year round, except in winter, in order to determine their activity patterns. Sleep was shown to account annually for 87 % of the time. Feeding takes place during the first half of the night. From midnight to daybreak, other important seasonal activities, such as social contacts, exploration and nest-building were recorded. The most important biotic and abiotic factors promoting activity among hedgehogs are climate, physiological state and nutrition. However, marked individual variations were found among the individual studied.
