Abstract

First, the spatial distortions inherent in the map graticule of geographical maps are listed. The problems of size distortion, particularly when many maps follow one another in atlases, are then dealt with in the same way. Second, the question of equal-area graticules in geographical maps is discussed, together with the possible limits of max. area distortion at a minimum of size distortion. Studies have shown that a 10 % area distortion in geographical maps is not perceived visually in the majority of cases. In the third part, specific coefficients are determined, using the ability to learn and recognize vegetation symbols. The extent to which the conceptions of a target group should be taken into account when compiling a legend is then discussed.
