Abstract

The recent introduction of the term relief into geographical vocabulary, and its borrowing from artistic vocabulary present the problem of the evolution since the Renaissance, of the ways of seeing, interpreting and representing the earth's surface. The new ways of perceiving and organizing space which appeared in the manierist and baroque periods, then the 19th century discovery of the role of erosion in morphogenesis are the origin of our present modes of geographical analysis and study of topography.
