Abstract

The diet of the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) in Grande Sologne, central France, is described. Pellet samples were collected from 35 localities. They included more than 18,000 food items. The number and relative importance of the mammal species captured by barn owls show little variability within the individual study areas. However, three different dietary patterns (called facies) were distinguished on the basis of the frequency of the various prey items. In each of the three facies however, the diet composition remained the same. Prey abundance can be adapted to a Motomura model. This is interpreted as the consequence of the adaptation of the predator to the overall distribution of the more abundant prey species.
